Amsterdam in 2 days

Took SQ324 to Amsterdam out of Changi on the 10th of July at 2345 hrs. Airfare was a cheap $97, all taxes. Brother was kind enough to send me there. Definitely wasnt expecting anyone to send me off, since i'll be back on the 14th.

The flight out wasnt crowded, and i did an internet check-in for a seat along the aisle. Didnt even bother opening up the headset package, was still busy reading Anne Frank's Diary of a Young Girl as well as Eyewitness Travel Top 10 Amsterdam Travel guide, and slept quite well, especially with the eye shades i requested for Mel.

Amsterdam Airport is called Schiphol. Pronounced "she - pole"? It was quite a big airport and initially i was slightly lost, as to where to get the train tickets to take to Amsterdam city centre. Train ride was $3.50 euro plus another $0.50 for tax for a 2nd class seat, which was very comfortable. Ride took 15-20 minutes to reach Centraal Station. So far so good, no big hiccups. Cigarettes (Malboro Menthol Light) was cheap at $3.90 euro, though lighter was at $1.50 euro. Well, better this than taking weed in the many coffeeshops littered around here.

Mel wud only arrive one hour after, so decided to go to the tourist office to get the I Amsterdam card, basically a tourist card that covers free entrance to many museums such as Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh museum, Museum Amstelkring, Amsterdam Historisch Museum, and also unlimited free public transport rides as well as one free canal boat tour ride. Got the 48 hour pass for $43 euro.

After that, i decided to check out the location of the hotel i booked since there was still time and it was only about 300 metres away from Centraal station. After walking around for almost 10 minutes, i realised i had missed it so decided to navigated again, this time closely with the map given in the guide book i had, and it turned out it was really closer than expected, like just 2-3 min walk from the station and 1 min walk from the Damrak, the stretch of road leading to the Dam Square.

The hotel is a 3 star hotel, and for 2 nights, it costs $176 euro. Not a bad deal for its location and price. Since i couldnt check in till 12 noon, i left my luggage in the hotel's storeroom n met mel first. Took a walk around Dam square before moving on...

De Bijenkorf - Amsterdam's best known department store

The National Monument - To commemorate the Dutch killed in WWII

Apparently one of the better hotels in the Dam square

Koninklijk Palace - a 17th Century building built as a town hall initially, now a Royal Palace

Nieuwe Kerk (New Church) - the setting for the coronation of every Dutch Monarch since the 19th century

Madame Tussaud
